Primary Care Q & A

What is primary care?

Your primary care practitioner is the first stop on your journey toward optimal health. The experts at the offices of Dr. Milton Chávez MD, SC, take an integrative approach to medicine — including primary care — that includes holistic treatments, preventive care, and traditional medical therapy.

Most insurance covers at least one preventive consultation with a primary care provider per year. Either Dr. Chávez or nurse practitioner Flores can act as your primary care practitioner, offering such services as:

  • Annual physicals
  • Screenings for disease
  • Preventive care
  • Immunizations
  • Sick visits when you’re not feeling well
  • Medications or medical marijuana
  • Specialized men’s or women’s health care
  • Referring you to a specialist when needed

Your primary care provider also coordinates with the other members of your health care team if you have a complex health problem. They perform all the recommended screenings and immunizations based on your age group and gender.

What happens in a primary care exam?

At the Dr. Milton Chávez MD, SC, office, Dr. Chávez and nurse practitioner Flores both emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and preventive strategies in achieving and maintaining health. When you come for a consultation, they spend time talking to you about any health concerns you have, and take a complete medical and family history.

They also perform a comprehensive physical exam, using both manual palpation and instruments to examine your:

  • Head and neck
  • Mouth, throat, and tonsils
  • Nasal passages
  • Eyes and ears
  • Heart and lungs
  • Abdomen
  • Skin
  • Reflexes

An exam also consists of measuring variables such as:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Respiration rate
  • Temperature

Your practitioner orders blood tests and urine tests, if needed, to make sure your internal organs are functioning well and that you’re free of infections or other markers of disease.

What happens if I get sick?

If you experience a health emergency, you should go straight to the emergency room. If you or your child is ill or is experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, you can schedule an appointment at Dr. Milton Chávez MD, SC for a complete examination and diagnosis. If you’re ill, your primary care provider may prescribe medications or lifestyle adjustments so that you feel well again.

What if I prefer alternative medicine?

As holistic practitioners, Dr. Chávez and nurse practitioner Flores always recommend the least invasive, most natural and supportive therapies possible. However, sometimes traditional medicine is the best and fastest route to health.
